The way Den Leaders plan meetings has been completely updated and streamlined. Instead of purchasing a separate physical Den Leader Guide, everything you need is now digital and directly tied to the kids' handbooks.
To prepare for a meeting, simply choose a Cub Scout Adventure from your grade-specific handbook (if it is your first meeting of the year, the Bobcat Adventure is the recommended starting point). Then, scan the QR code located in the handbook or visit the Scouting America Den Meeting Resources page to access the specific requirements, safety moments, and recommended activities for that adventure.
Scouting America recommends a straightforward structure for your meetings:
Before the Meeting: Review the adventure webpage, note any Safety Moments, and gather your necessary supplies.
During the Meeting: Run a simple opening (Pledge of Allegiance, Scout Oath, and Law), complete the hands-on activities, recognize the kids with their adventure loops or pins if they finished the requirements, and conduct a formal closing.
After the Meeting: Record the completed requirements in Scoutbook and send a quick thank-you to any parents who helped out.
We use Scoutbook as our official roster and advancement tracking system. After each den meeting, you are responsible for logging in and checking off the specific requirements your scouts completed. Keeping this accurate and up-to-date ensures the kids receive their earned adventure loops and rank patches on time during our monthly pack meetings at the K.C. Coombs School. If you need assistance setting up your den's view or navigating the approval process, the Pack Committee can walk you through the system.
As a reminder, maintaining current Safeguarding Youth Training (SYT) is a mandatory requirement for your role. You must renew this certification at my.scouting.org before it expires to remain an active leader. Beyond the mandatory safety protocols, taking the online Den Leader Specific Training module is highly recommended. It provides a practical overview of how to structure a typical meeting, manage group dynamics, and utilize the resources available to you.
Because Pack 36 operates without local dues, the program is funded entirely through our local fundraising efforts like popcorn sales. If you need to purchase consumable supplies for a den meeting activity—such as craft materials or project hardware—keep your receipts. You can submit these receipts directly to the Pack Treasurer for reimbursement. We ask that you keep den meeting expenses reasonable and consult with the Pack Committee beforehand if you are planning an unusually expensive project or den outing.
